PDapp
Problem
The decision making process involving third molar removal or maintenance remains controversial in dental practice because the prediction of eruption of the third molar tooth is associated with great uncertainty. The most important variables to predict eruption of third molar are the analysis of retromolar space and the direction of eruption. The different methods to predict the third molar eruption included linear measures (measurement of the available space, mandibular size and growth, mesiodistal size of third molar, and/or angular measures (third molar angulation). Although different predictive methods in the prognosis of third molar eruption have been described none of these methods predicted the third molar eruption with great accuracy. The available softwares are not suitable for the prediction of third molar eruption from panoramic radiograph.
Proposed Solution: PDApp
PDApp is a new reliable and easy-to-use software tool to estimate the Third Molar Eruption Potential from the panoramic radiological images of adolescents/teenagers patients. This software fulfill the following requirements:
It is simple and easy to use and install, providing a friendly graphical user interface to interactively work with the digital radiographic images and manually draw the retromolar space, third molar diameter and angle on the image.
Use a machine learning algorithm to automatically predict probability of positive (eruption) and negative (non-eruption) potential.
Allow the revision, share and save the analysis at any time.
It could be easily implemented in the daily practice of the dental clinics. PDApp will facilitate and optimize routinary oral radiological examination and lead to a ever-increasing diagnostic accuracy and optimization of treatment planning. PDApp offer a major advance over what is currently available for the daily clinical practice.
